Changing Toda gears into oil pump

This is where we start. One oil pump with small gearset, a.k.a. late model oil pump. Stock gears are marked with dots, I dont know why.

Remove stock gears and wash everything with care.

Insert Toda gears.

Lubricate freely. I used Red Line installation goop.

After this I checked the gear cover still fits and added a drop of Permatex thread locker into screw threads. The thread locker I used is good up to +150C.

Torque to 10Nm. All done 🙂

Toyota 4A-GZE 365cc injectors

As much information as possible about toyota 4A-GZE 365cc injectors. This post will get some updates later.

  • Low impedance, found a web page claiming 3.4Ω, another one claiming 2.9Ω. Better measure mine.
  • NipponDenso built
  • Connector is surprisingly NipponDenso (Sumitomo) low guide connector.
  • They’re red 🙂
  • 365cc – 3bar, but I dont have the normal 4A-GZE AW11 fuel system pressure available. I’m guessing the pressure might be around 2.5bar and actual maximum somewhere near 300cc, maybe even less.

Nozzle. This type might do twin stream to both intake channels.

Bottom seal diameter is around 16mm. I forgot to measure the height.

Toyota calls this part insulator, injector vibration. Part number 23291-41010

Part number is 23250-16061. There are some differences between injectors, mine seem to be marked white so the complete part number for my injectors is 23250-16061-04.

Older 4A-GZEs had 23250-16060 injectors. I’m unsure how they differ from these.

From bottom seal center to upper seal center (c-to-c) is around 62mm

Side view

Total length is 72,5mm

Connector. Dirty AF.

The rubber thing next to connector and “below” top o ring should be Grommet (For fuel injector)  – part number 90480-13005.

The widest point is 21mm

Nozzle diameter is 10,4mm

Another nozzle picture

Top o-ring diameter is 11,5mm. Toyota calls this one Ring, O (For fuel injector) – part number is 90301-07001.

Thickness is 2mm

The other wide bit at the bottom of the injector, 16mm.

Coilpack, camshafts and one corroded valve

Here is the corroded exhaust camshaft getting polished

…and testfitting it

Brand new intake camshaft

Quick test with the coil on plug. This is one of those long Lexus COPs that are used in RX300. It fits but some fabrication is needed.

…and last, one of the three corroded valves. One might think that the corrosion would be on the exhaust valves, but for some reason it only affected intake valves.

Shit luck

At least three valves were corroded. While cleaning them, the hard coating just flaked off. Shit luck. Ordered a full set of supertech standard size valves.

All clouds have silver bla blaaa. Luckily I found a set of 20v head cam followers. My 20v head was missing those. Also, found a set of 1SZ-FE cam followers. I’ll try to see if I could get those work on my 16v head as solid cam followers.

Got IN/EX HKS 272 degree 8.1mm lift camshafts with HKS springs. IN was brand new but EX had been sitting somewhere where it had attracted rust. Someone then had machined the camshaft and it was really good. Garage neighbor gave a hand and polished the bearing surfaces for me.

Auto Verdi sent me four conrods, which felt like they were made by elves out of mithril.

…and just got a pile of plastigauge so I can check bearing tolerances. For proper tightening torque, I have to wait a little bit longer. Ordered a high tech torque wrench from germany, but it hasnt arrived yet.

Critical things I’m still missing:

  • Cam followers (1SZ-FE solids or Supertech?)
  • Cam gears (maybe toda?)
  • Intake + throttle body
  • Injectors + connectors (Bosch EV14 1000cc?)
  • Wiring loom
  • Intercooler
  • Turbo hardware kit
  • Exhaust
  • Cam covers (still being painted)
  • Crank bearings
  • Conrod bearings
  • Idle air valve (really?)

…was that all?

Piston rings + crank girdle

Checking pistons and rings:

Gap on fourth cylinder is 0.35mm.

Pistons seem to fit into block. That is a good thing.

A package from Manon Racing Products arrived, containing Toda timing belt and oil pump gears, N2 style additional timing belt tensioner (or guide) and a crank girdle.

Timing belt tensioner. Fitment is very good.

And the crank girdle. A serious piece of hardware. I needed only some stiffening but now the engine will be bombproof.

Veeery nice 🙂

JDM Loot

At last! I though I had lost forever my inexperienced driver sign. I left it in the most secure place I could imagine: behind the two posters of Widrics race car.

My Raybrig shirt found its final resting place:

It has been signed by Raybrig’s race queens, who invited me into some kind of raffle. I won something and I had to choose between three things and one of the things was the t-shirt. The shirt is still hanging on the wall in the picture below:

I wanted to see Kazumi Kondo!
